Easy Iced Coffee With Better Brewed Coffee

Ingredients To Make Homemade Iced Coffee

How to Make Cold Brewed Coffee

  • coffee grounds or instant coffee
  • water
  • creamer
  • ice

Once you stock up on your favorite coffee and creamer, you can make dozens of homemade iced coffees at a fraction of what you would pay for them at a coffee shop.

I personally love to use almond milk and soy milk creamers, as they are not only a little healthier, but very creamy and taste amazing.

If you start to get tired of your coffee, just switch coffee brands.

I always find that all I needed was a change of flavor. I usually alternate between several instant coffee brands, and occasionally mix it up with brewed chilled folgers or starbucks coffee.

Coffee lovers rejoice!

Making Iced Coffee With Milk

Making iced coffee with milk is more or less the same as making it with water. If youre using coffee ice cubes or the instant coffee method, top off the glass with chilled milk instead of water.

When youve brewed your coffee, you can milk to the blend before chilling it and follow the rest of the steps as mentioned above.

Iced Coffee Method: Moka Pot Coffee Poured Over Ice

  • Time: 5 to 10 minutes
  • Overall rating: 9.5/10

About this method: For those unfamiliar with a moka pot, its an Italian household staple that looks similar to a percolator. A moka pot has three chambers: The bottom area is where you place boiling water, then there is a basket for coffee grounds and an upper chamber where the brewed coffee percolates to. Start with boiling the water . While your water is heating up, grind your beans into fine grounds. Fill the boiling water in the bottom chamber, add the grounds to the basket, then screw on the filled coffee grounds chamber. Lastly, screw the top chamber onto the moka pot. Place the moka pot on the stove over low or medium-low heat. In moments the coffee begins to elegantly brew from out of the top vessel into the chamber. Once it begins to sputter, remove it from the heat. Pour it over ice.

Results: This was a delicious, bold cup of iced coffee. All the right intense flavors were coming through. The coffee was so strong that I thought I mistakenly put the espresso beans in it.;

My takeaway: I usually drink iced espresso at home and I felt the moka pot was the method that brought me closest to that flavor without using espresso beans. This method was fast and simple. I loved watching the brew come out of the pot spouts like a coffee fountain of deliciousness. This also was very tasty with oat milk and didnt lose any of those bold flavors.

What Type Of Coffee Should I Use

Like any cup of joe, you should choose high-quality coffee beans to make the coffee for your iced coffee recipe. I swear this is not a plug for Lavazza but I love their dark roast coffee. You can buy the beans on their own and grind them using a coffee grinder at home, or you can buy pre-ground coffee your local grocery store. It's up to you!

I will often try to go to my fave local cafes as well and buy their house blends, or pick up some coffee from Starbucks. That way you get the same taste of your favorite coffee place without having to spend $5 per drink!

Why Should You Cold Brew Your Coffee

This coffee-making method has a few things going for it:

  • The slow infusion pulls all the great coffee flavor from the beans .
  • But it also leaves behind most of the compounds that can make coffee taste bitter and sour.
  • This means that cold brewed coffee is incredibly smooth and almost sweet-tasting. Perfect for iced coffee.

You can also adjust the concentration of your cold brew coffee, making it stronger or less strong to suit your taste. Start with one cup of beans steeped in four cups of water. This will make a fairly concentrated coffee on its own, but it's perfect for pouring over ice or mixing with milk – or both. If that ratio of beans to water isn't quite to your taste, adjust it up or down until you hit the perfect balance for you.

I also really love that this method for making coffee actually saves me time in the morning. I make a big batch over the weekend, starting it on Saturday or Sunday night and straining it the next morning, and then stash it in the fridge for an easy coffee fix all week long.

How To Make Iced Coffee With French Press

The French Press is the most versatile little device to make coffee. Not only you can make great hot coffee but also easily choose how much of it you want.

This is perfect for single drinkers or if you dont need several cups for a huge boost of caffeine.

How To Serve Iced Coffee

3 Easy Ways To Make Iced Coffee

If you are preparing the iced coffee fresh, then serving it in a tall glass would be suitable.

Additionally, you could also serve it in a Yeti Tumbler or a similar stainless steel insulated mug to keep your coffee cold for 2 hours on those hot summer days and prevent dilution and preserve the original flavor longer.

When you are making a larger batch, then you can store it in any glass or jar you like; mason jars are a great way to keep your iced coffee fresh in the fridge.

How To Strain Your Cold Brew

Once youre done steeping the coffee, youll need to strain the coffee grounds out of the water. A fine-mesh sieve or French press filter isnt sufficient . Most methods will suggest using cheese cloth, but I hate cheese cloth! Its difficult to work with and seems so wasteful.

I played around with other options and found two that work great. See my photos for examples of each. Choose one:

  • Thin paper coffee filters: Use the;basket paper filters that splay out in a round seashell shape like you see here. Make sure your filter is made of;very thin paper, not a thicker material that will take forever to filter through. These are the filters I used.
  • A vintage handkerchief: Yes, reallyany small, thin, clean, lint-free, cotton cloth like a cocktail napkin will do. It should be large enough to cover your sieve when draped across it. I found my handkerchief at the bottom of my photo props, and I love that its easy to wash and reusable .
  • To strain, simply place the coffee filter into a small fine-mesh sieve, or drape your cloth over the sieve. Place it over a pitcher or liquid measuring cup, and pour the concentrate through it. Thats it!

Have I convinced you to try making cold brew coffee at home? Its so much cheaper than buying it from the coffee shop! Please let me know how it turns out for you in the comments.

Want to change it up? Try making cold brew iced tea. Like cold brew coffee, its more smooth and less bitter.

How To Make Hot Brewed Coffee For An Iced Coffee With A French Press

The easiest way to make hot brewed iced coffee is to just use the normal way you would brew coffee in a French Press.

The only difference is that you have to pour ice into your french press when youre done brewing. Its that simple.

The first thing you will need is a French Press with a capacity of at least 34 ounces.

A good french press of this capacity is the KONA French Press.

The next thing you will need is coffee, of course. You can buy whole beans or ground coffee.

Whichever you choose, it will depend on how strong and how expensive you would like your coffee to be.

Put the coffee and the water in your french press and put it in place.

Screw on your press -tightly to prevent air from getting into the coffee.

Give the press a good shake and let it sit for 10-20 minutes before you screw on the plunger.

The next step is to plunge the coffee and give it a really good, hard shake.

If there were any grounds left in the bottom of your french press, this step will get them all out.

    Making The Iced Vanilla Latte

Vanilla lattes are so easy to make and you dont need to splurge on an expensive vanilla bean to get good flavour with this syrup. Like the rest of the syrups here, the formula is pretty straightforward. Make a plain simple syrup by mixing boiling water and sugar together, then add in your flavouring of choice.

For this vanilla latte, I used plain old artificial vanilla extract but you could use the more expensive pure extract or opt for the vanilla bean if you can find them. But really, the vanilla latte is the easiest of all to make. Like the machiatto, start with an empty cup full of ice. Brew two espresso shots and pour them over the ice, then stir in 1 cup of milk and add vanilla syrup to your taste. Yum!

What Kind Of Coffee Should You Use

Youll want to use cold coffee otherwise, your ice will melt before you can enjoy your drink. You have a couple of options: make an extra-large batch when you brew hot coffee in the morning, or whip up a batch of cold brew concentrate. If you make extra hot coffee, let it cool on the counter for a few minutes, and then put it in the refrigerator in a lidded container.

Cold brew concentrate takes more time about 16 hours but its a very hands-off process. And the flavor will be mellow and sweet, probably just what youre looking for in a caramel coffee drink!

    Ninja Coffee Bar Method

This post has been updated a few times, and after I first wrote it a few years ago, I got a Ninja Coffee Bar. And it's pretty much my favorite thing ever!

This system has a special function that lets you brew a single cup of coffee directly over ice … without watering it down. It works perfectly every time, takes minutes to make, and I absolutely love it.

I've also used my Ninja to make specialty espresso-style drinks like affogato and lattes. The best thing about it though, is that you can make everything from full pots of coffee to single cups … all without wasteful pods!

The Winning Method: Japanese Pour Over

    • Time: 5 minutes
    • Flavor rating: 10/10

About this method: For this method, you will need a few extra tools to make pour over coffee. There are many popular Japanese-style coffee brewers on the market, but you can also just rig up your own pour over system. You will also need to have a scale so you can have a very accurate coffee-water-ice ratio. Set the carafe on top of the scale and set it to zero. Add 8 ounces of ice, set the dripper vessel or cone on top, line with a filter, add 1 ounce of medium coarsely ground coffee, and then tare the scale again. Youll need 8 ounces of almost-boiling water, but you dont pour it in all at once: Pour just enough water into the grounds to wet them and let it sit for 30 seconds. This process is called blooming, and it helps release some aromas that come through in the final product. Pour the rest of the water into the vessel until you have poured 8 ounces, then allow the coffee to drain into the bottom vessel. The hot coffee drips directly on the ice, immediately cooling it down while extracting and preserving all the delicious aromas of the coffee.

Results: This super-popular method of making coffee is a favorite for a reason. Flavors and aromas that I didnt taste in the other methods were coming through, bringing a whole other dimension to iced coffee.;This was the smooth, delicious coffee without any bitter notes that I was after.
