How to Draw A Cartoon Boat – Let's get Started!
Step 1
We will begin with the base of your cartoon boat drawing in this first step of the guide.
As you can see in our reference image, this is drawn as a fairly simple flat shape, but it can still be trickier than you may expect!
There is a thin diagonal section to it, and this extends into a more horizontal section for the front of the ship's body.
This is a step where you should try to carefully follow our reference image. We would also highly recommend using a ruler for this and future steps, as it will make your life much easier!
Step 2 – Next, draw another section for the base of the boat
You're not quite done with the base of the boat, and we will add another section in this step of our guide on how to draw a cartoon boat.
This next section will go directly above the section that you drew in the previous step. For this section, you will notice there is a lot more detail than there was for the previous part.
For example, you can see the rim of the deck outline in this one.
Once you have drawn this section, we can move on!
Step 3 – Now, draw the start of the cabin
As with real boats, there is often a small cabin on-board, and we will start drawing this now. It should be a simple step, and it's another we think a ruler would be perfect!
All you need to do is draw three straight vertical lines near the front of the boat.
The top of this cabin will be blank, but we will fix that soon enough.
Step 4 – Next, draw a mast
Before we add the rest of the cabin for your cartoon boat drawing, we will first add a mast. This looks simple, but it is another one that can be a bit tricky.
Yet again, this is a step where a ruler would really help. The mast is separated into three sections, and each one is thinner than the last.
There will also be a thin, straight section poking off to the left, as shown in our example.
Step 5 – Now, finish off the cabin
We will now finish off the cabin you began in step 3 of this guide on how to draw a cartoon boat. First, use some straight lines to create the thin roof of the cabin.
Them, we will draw a round window on the side with a rectangular window for the front.
That's all there is to it, and then we can proceed!
Step 6 – Next, draw the start of the sail
Now we can start drawing the sail for this boat, and we will begin by drawing a thin, wavy flag at the tip of the mast.
Then, using your ruler you can draw a straight line from the horizontal pole you drew on the mast previously up to just below the flag.
Then, there are just a few final details to add in the next step before we color this boat in!
Step 7 – Finish off the pattern on the sail
You're ready to add some pattern details to your cartoon boat drawing in this step, and we will also add any other final touches you may like.
For the sail, you can simply draw some straight horizontal lines across the triangular sail you began in the previous step.
Once this is drawn, you can then add your own details! To finish it off nicely, you could draw a background to show where this boat could be sailing.
What kind of ocean setting would you like to create for this cartoon boat?
Step 8 – Now finish it off with some color
For the final step of this guide, we will finish off with some coloring fun. To do this, we will use various shades of browns for the exterior of the boat.
Then, for the sail we alternated some light shades of blue for the pattern. These are the colors we chose, but you should feel free to change up any of the colors as you like!
This is all about creating your perfect boat design, so you can really get creative with the colors and art tools you use.
How will you complete this amazing cartoon boat you've been working on?
