Most routers, including the ones AT&T gives you, have a dedicated WPS button.
I wanted to find out what it does, so I went online to find out.
While online, I found out that WPS was very unsecure, even though it is very convenient.
The next thing on my mind is to disable the entire thing, so I took to the Internet again to find out how.
I searched through AT&T support pages and user forums to find out more about turning WPS off.
This guide is a result of that research and made so that you can also turn off WPS on your AT&T router.
To disable WPS on your AT&T router, log in to the admin tools. From there, find the WPS setting and turn it off.
What is WPS Mode?
WPS or Wi-Fi Protected Setup mode is a feature on most devices capable of Wi-Fi that lets you connect to a Wi-Fi network it creates without knowing the password for it.
It works almost like how you would pair something with Bluetooth, and this convenience has led router manufacturers to make this a regular feature in their routers.
How Does it Work?
The popular way to connect to a Wi-Fi network would be to know its identifier or SSID, connecting to that SSID and entering the password, which can be a long string of characters that can be difficult to remember.
WPS bypasses the need to remember long passwords by creating an easy-to-remember PIN that you can use while connecting.
This is good for users who don't want to go through the hassle of setting up a Wi-Fi network and setting a password that they might forget down the line.
People who are not very good with technology also find this feature quite convenient.
What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of WPS?
As with every piece of convenient technology, WPS also has its benefits and some drawbacks.
The benefits to using WPS can be:
- Setting up WPS is extremely straightforward. Since there is no long passphrase to connect, the whole process is just you pressing the WPS button and connecting.
- WPS is also easy to use for people who are new to technology. The minimum amount of setup it requires makes it accessible for everyone.
- It's fast as well, especially when connecting multiple devices. Press the WPS button, and all the devices in the router's range connect to the network.
WPS may sound perfect, but its not without its flaws:
- It is not as secure as Wi-Fi. Since the PINs are easy to remember, they are easy to guess as well. Brute force attacks conducted in experimental setups have shown that someone can bypass the PIN.
- Anyone can turn WPS on. They just need physical access to the router. Combined with the fact that routers also display the PIN, its very easy for someone unauthorized to turn it on.
- If you have older network hardware that uses WEP security, WPS will not work.
Why Would You Want to Disable WPS?
It has been proven in an experimental setup that WPS networks can easily be broken into by brute-forcing or trying every possible PIN combination.
The researcher was able to do this in a few hours and has urged users to turn off WPS on their devices.
Even though the chances of you falling prey to such an attack is extremely rare, I'd suggest you turn off WPS on your router anyway.
It is better to be proactive than to be reactive sometimes.
Disable WPS on AT&T Router Using the App
AT&T offers you the choice to turn off WPS from the admin app that you can access from any browser on any device.

Changing the password allows you to boot out any unauthorized users on the network if there are any, and besides, changing passwords is a good practice regardless of wherever you are on the Internet.
